Master of Arts in Dramatic Art offered by the University of the Witwatersrand
The MA in Dramatic Art can be obtained by Research, by Creative Practice, or by Coursework and Research Report, over 1 year full-time or 2 years-part-time.
MA by Research (Dissertation) - Students who have an honours degree and/or sufficient expertise in their proposed field of research may obtain a Master’s degree by independent research under the guidance of an approved supervisor.MA by Creative Practice - The MADA degree by creative practice is attained by doing a creative project under the supervision of a staff member. The project could be visual/object-based/oral/aural/written and pursued in three broad areas –acting, directing and design. The creative project allows students to reflect and build upon the work they have done all year and to complete a lengthy and advanced piece of written work and a professional portfolio. This degree is aimed at students who have considerable professional experience and who wish to produce a creative project as a substantial component of their MA research.MA by Coursework and Research Report - The MA by Coursework and Research Report is a Theatre Making degree programme where students are given space to contribute to the production of performance through any of the following channels or their combination; direction, dramaturgy, writing, scenography, sound and lighting production and physical theatre. Students then engage in independent research, whether investigating past or present performances or as part of the process of creating new performance. All MA by coursework students must complete three compulsory MA level course units offered by the department of Theatre and Performance:• Radical Theatre Research (1st semester) • Critical Practice: Revising/Devising (1st semester)• Critical Practice: Performance (2nd semester) • Research Report
