Bachelor of Science with Honours in Geochemistry offered by the University of the Witwatersrand
Geochemists use a range of chemical tools to understand how the Earth works. These tools include the major element, trace element and isotopic composition of rocks, meteorites, fossils and groundwater. We apply these tools to Earth’s core, mantle, crust and surficial environs, with a focus on understanding the processes operating in these different parts of the Earth.
Using these tools requires state-of-the-art instrumentation, including a variety of clean laboratories as well as atomic and mass spectrometers, together with foundational field and petrological observations. Why study Geochemistry?Rock and mineral chemistry is one of the most informative aspects of Earth Science and one of the most powerful tools in understanding the formation of the Earth and processes that operate on Earth. Geochemistry students receive hands-on training, working with a range of state-of-the-art analytical equipment in the School of Geosciences such as laser ablation instruments, mass spectrometers and ultra-clean isotope laboratories. In addition, there is a focus on acquiring, reducing and handling geochemical data produced from these instruments and labs.Geochemistry also provides the opportunity for students to combine, to varying degrees, field work with laboratory studies. The Honours project, which forms a crucial part of the degree, can be tailored to contain various geochemical components as desired by the student. Why study Geochemistry at Wits? The School of Geosciences is one of the largest and most diverse groupings of geoscientists in Africa, with strengths in geology, geochemistry, geophysics and palaeontology. Honours students can select from a wide range of research topics and have access to excellent preparation and analytical facilities for petrography, geochemistry, and hydrogeology. We are centred in the hub of geological activity in South Africa and host numerous events each year that allow students to network with industry. Geochemistry at Wits University has a long and strong history of fundamental and applied research and training, supported by world-class analytical infrastructure.
