Program Length: 3 YEARS.
Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering offered by the University of the Witwatersrand
Overview
Chemical engineers combine the disciplines of Chemistry and Physics, expressed in mathematical language, with concepts such as course operations and reaction kinetics, to develop industrial chemical processes. As a chemical engineer, you will build on the findings of the research chemist, who works with small amounts of materials in the laboratory. You will be concerned with the design, construction, operation, and marketing of equipment that can reproduce the processes or products developed by chemists on a large scale. These include materials needed for specialist applications in the aerospace, automotive, biomedical, and electronics industries. You might also work in biotechnology, designing bioreactors for plant cultures, or using bacteria to extract minerals from their ores, or in electronics, where you will conduct research on the synthesis of micro-electronic components.
