There’s more to being a good professional than a degree. Learn which are the skills you need to be a quality doctor.
For every career, there is a certain profile professionals should fit in order to be considered good at what they do. The knowledge and experience a doctor has acquired during their journey through medical school and their time in the workforce is obviously a requirement, but there’s more to being a quality doctor than earning a degree.
What does it take to be a Quality Doctor?
Here are some skills all doctors should have:
1. Communication skills
Being able to communicate with patients both effectively and empathically is vital. Not only is it important to find the right words, but also to be a good listener, as patients might tell doctors what’s wrong if they are given the opportunity.
Plus, it’s vital that doctors know how to talk to patients without so much terminology as well as without talking down to them.
2. Collaboration
Communication skills are vital when talking to patients, but doctors should also be able to communicate effectively with their colleagues and when sharing information in the healthcare system. Teamwork and collaboration are vital in the field of medicine, as doctors are constantly working with colleagues, for example, when presented with a case they cannot solve.
3. Empathy
Going to the doctor may be a scary experience for many people. Many times patients are afraid of what they might find out, which is why they need the reassurance that they are in good hands. A quality doctor is able to make their patients feel they are heard, that their concerns are valid, and that they are well taken care of.
It is vital that doctors see patients as human beings who have feelings, not as a list of medical problems, which is why they should show them they care for them.
4. Curiosity
Doctors must be led by curiosity. A good doctor is constantly learning and finding out what’s new in the field of medicine. On top of that, when presented with a patient with rare symptoms, their curiosity must lead them to take all the measures possible to find a diagnosis.
5. Patient advocators
Meeting patients’s needs must be doctors #1 priority. No matter what their needs are, patients must feel the doctor is advocating for them and trying as hard as they can to help them. The best doctors are the ones who are willing to go the extra mile for their patients’ well-being.
These are a few of the skills all good doctors have. If you want to be a good doctor, one of those who really make a difference, then these are the skills you must make sure you have, or develop.
