Master of Urban Studies in Urban Research offered by the University of the Witwatersrand
The Master of Urban Studies in the field of Urban Research (by coursework and research) is interdisciplinary, requiring 65% average in an honours degree or equivalent.
Rapidly changing urban realities, particularly on the African continent, require ongoing and constantly innovating urban research. Urban research forms the backbone of evidence-based policy and intervention programmes. It informs robust political and technical debates about policy directions. Urban research, when reported through the media, also shapes public opinion, contributing to breaking down prejudices, discrimination and inequality. Urban research can also support important normative approaches which, if adopted, may turn the tide of urban exploitation. Inevitably interdisciplinary, urban research at various scales helps us bridge disciplines and sectors as well as artificial geographic boundaries. The MUS (UR) provides a thorough background in urban research, offering sound training prior to commencement of doctoral studies and for work-related research careers in public or private sector organizations or NGOs.
CurriculumThe MUS (UR) consists of coursework and research. The coursework, which has the same credit weighting as the research component, underpins the research enquiry. Unlike the other MUS fields, the MUS (UR) allows for two electives. Candidates interested in quantitative methods are advised to take SOSS7070A ‘Advanced Statistics for Demographic Survey’. The elective courses allow for individual specialisation. The degree is structured as follows:Students who lack particular skills are asked to take an additional course: ARPL7052A Technologies and Techniques of the Built Environment (20)
- 3 compulsory Category A courses (70 points)
- 2 electives from Category B (20 points)
- Research Report (90 points)
