Overview
Wits History of Art has an active cohort of postgraduate students pursuing Honours, Masters and PhD degrees. Here there is a dual emphasis on the condition of our postcoloniality and curatorial practices as core components of the construction of knowledge in the discipline. Students with Art History majors regularly go on to successful careers in curating, museums, galleries, filmmaking, fine arts, advertising, auction houses, filmmaking and journalism.

Students can undertake a Masters degree in History of Art either by coursework or dissertation. In the Masters degree by dissertation, students have the option to produce a written dissertation only, or a combination of written dissertation and practical body of work. The departmental PhD degree is by thesis only. Existing and prospective students may register for a single coursework unit as an occasional student. While no prior degree is necessary, students are required to complete an entrance test before being accepted. Our flexibly scheduled postgraduate courses provide an opportunity for working professionals to work on individual projects and expand their knowledge base, research and seminar skills and fieldwork experiences. Successful completion of a course can count towards a postgraduate degree or diploma
