This Master of Medicine (MMed) programme is offered in all the recognised specialities of medicine in South Africa. This programme is structured to meet the Health Professions Council of South Africa's (HPSCA) requirements for specialisation. It extends over a period of four to five years. Candidates must be incumbents of registered training posts.

Assessment and examination
Part IPart II
- You must complete Part I of the programme within 18 months of commencement of studies.
- Assessment is done in the form of course work, and written and oral examinations.
- If you fail to successfully complete Part I of the programme within 18 months, you must suspend your studies and vacate your registrar post.
- Only in exceptional cases, and with the submission of an appropriate motivation, will the postgraduate programme committee of the Department of Psychiatry consider continuation of your service in a registrar post and further attendance of the programme.
- You must have completed Part I before attempting Part II.
- You must also complete the course work, portfolio and research project before attempting the Part II final examinations of the College or Psychiatrists of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.
- The final mark for the programme is calculated as follows:
- 75% for the Part II examinations; and
- 25% for the research assignment which must be submitted as a manuscript for publication.
- You must achieve a pass mark in both divisions to qualify for the MMed degree and to register as a specialist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
- The research assignment is examined by internal and external examiners and you have to obtain at least 50% for it to pass.
- The HPCSA also requires the head of the discipline to confirm the following:
- the completion of portfolio of learning;
- the successful completion of training time;
- the successful completion of the research assignment according to the regulations of the University; and
- the successful completion of the flexible assessment.
- If you resign as registrar with the Western Cape Provinicial Departement of Health or are denied the right by the Faculty Board to continue with your studies, you must vacate your registrar post.
