Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in Plant and Soil Science offered by the Stellenbosch University
This four-year programme in plant and soil sciences covers training in producing agronomic and vegetable crops, pastures, aromatic plants, deciduous fruit, citrus, cutflowers and grapevines. For each crop, knowledge of the following is integrated into a meaningful whole: agricultural economics, biochemistry, biometry, crop production, entomology, genetics, nematology, plant pathology and soil science.
In this programme there are three fields of study from which you may choose.
Crop production systemsIn this field of study you receive training in the production and quality management of, among others, agronomic crops (for example winter cereals such as wheat, barley, rye and oats, as well as canola and lupins), deciduous fruit, citrus, fynbos, grapevines and greenhouse crops.A new module combination is available in this field of study, namely Animal Science, Agricultural Economics, and Soil Science. This combination brings together the dimensions of soil, plant, livestock and economics, equipping prospective farmers and farm managers to take care of the technical and financial-economic production planning of a mixed farming system.Crop protection and crop breedingThis field of study trains you as an expert in crop protection (insect and nematode infestations and plant diseases and their control) and genetic crop improvement (breeding and manipulation).Soil and water managementThis field of study gives you the expertise to understand the nature, importance and management of soil and water as they relate to crop production.Following one of these three fields of study prepares you for a variety of careers in the agricultural industry or agriculture-related industries, including careers such as adviser, consultant, entrepreneur, manager, technician and researcher.Taking one of these three fields of study prepares you for a variety of careers in the agriculture industry or agriculture-related industries, including careers such as adviser, consultant, entrepreneur, manager, technician and researcher.
