The programme focuses on developing in-depth knowledge of, and therapeutic skills for, the diagnosis, treatment, care and management of individuals with a mental disorder at a primary, secondary and tertiary care level, with specific emphasis on consultation-liaison skills.It also equips you with a contextual understanding of our health service system, its dynamics, and how this affects health service delivery. The programme aims to produce critically thinking, creative and reflective practitioners who are able to provide leadership and specialised mental health care, and to act as a resource for mental health services in South Africa.

Assessment and examination
- A variety of formative and summative assessment methods are used. You are assessed individually by means of:
- assignments;
- the application of research principles in a research project;
- patient case presentations;
- clinical rounds;
- case studies;
- clinical assessment;
- written tests and examinations; and
- assessment of psychomotor skills in your relevant specialist area.
- The results of the assessment must indicate that outcomes have been achieved. Your assessment as nursing specialist in practice must indicate the successful attainment of appropriate academic depth, focus and integration of theory and practice.
- Each module is assessed separately with a minimum pass mark of 50%.
- The final mark for the programme is calculated on the basis of the relative weight of each module, as indicated by the credit value for each module.
- You must get a final mark of 75% to obtain the degree cum laude.
