PurposeThis program has been designed for fulltime students and is aimed at introducing students to an academic or research career in Cardiovascular Physiology.
Modules to complete:• PHYS 615 Cellular signalling of the cardiovascular system• PHYS 616 Determinants of blood pressure and hypertension• PHYS 625 End-organ damage• PHYS 626 Cardiovascular pathology and treatment• PHYS 673 Research methodology*• PHYS 672 Research Report** year modulesIn addition to the theory work, you will need to write a research report consisting out of:1. Writing a research proposal.2. Submitting a scientific report.Topics for the report will focus on the cardiovascular system and given to you at the beginning of the year.This is an individual project.The academic program starts in January with orientation and training in the hypertension clinic.A typical week will consist out of:• theory classes;• mandatory clinic work;• working on your project;• assistant work;• as well as occasional journal clubs.All theory classes, the project, clinic work and journal club are mandatory.INVOLVEMENT IN THE HYPERTENSION RESEARCH AND TRAINING CLINIC AND THE RESEARCH LABORATORY• You will be assigned to the clinic as part of the research team for project-based or work-integrated learning.• It is a requirement that you will be involved with ongoing research projects in HART to obtain the necessary basic research skills that will allow you to conduct independent work as researcher in the future.• The established researchers and manager of the HART Research and Training Clinic will provide training in:- basic research protocols,- research administration,- and the research measurements conducted.
