Ignaz Semmelweis: Google Honours the Father of Infection Control amid Covid-19 Outbreak
Friday, 20 March 2020
As the covid-19 pandemic continues to spread around the world, Google’s animated doodle honours Ignaz Semmelweis by showing how to properly wash your hands in order to protect yourself from getting sick or spreading germs on every surface you touch.
In relation to the coronavirus outbreak, an action as common as washing your hands, which we never really gave importance until the pandemic arose, has become a matter of major concern nowadays. Health professionals have raised a worldwide alarm advising each individual that handwashing can be one of the most effective methods to prevent yourself from getting sick and, also, to avoid the spreading of the virus. This proceeding was first proposed by a German-Hungarian scientist named Ignaz Semmelweis in 1847.
Handwashing has not always been a common practice. Infections were easily spread among medical staff and patients until Dr. Semmelweis required all Vienna General Hospital medical staff to wash their hands. This simple action caused the rate of infections to subdue significantly.
An action as simple as washing your hands is just one of the examples that show how public health recommendations can protect people. Public health policies and recommendations like this one become of paramount importance at times like the one we are facing right now around the world.
Are you interested in these public health policies and recommendations? Are you concerned about people’s health? Then you should consider pursuing a career in Health Professions.
