Duration: The qualification shall extend over three years of full-time study.

Purpose of the learning programme
This qualification has been approved in terms of the new Higher Education Qualification Sub-Framework (HEQSF).

The BCom (Law) programme was introduced as a stream of an approved qualification, namely the LLB degree, as stakeholders in the legal profession have for many years asserted that it is important to expose prospective new entrants to the profession to a range of non-law disciplines in order to equip them optimally for the challenges of their chosen career. This approach has been strongly endorsed by the Faculty and the profession. The BCom (Law) stream has served this purpose well over the years.  The BCom (Law) programme is tailor-made for students who are interested in combining the fields of commerce and law. The degree equips them for exciting careers as legal professionals in a commercial environment in the private or public sector.  Graduates would be able to specialise in a wide range of commercial legal fields such as the resolution of labour disputes, facilitating negotiation and conflict resolution. Graduates also act as legal, risk and compliance consultants.

In addition to providing students with a broad perspective on both legal and commercial matters, the BCom (Law) lays an excellent foundation for a more advanced study of Law. Graduates can register for an LLB degree that can be completed in a further 2 years of study. LLB graduates practise as legal practitioners because of their broader academic background.

It also provides a thorough grounding in more than one of the academic disciplines traditionally associated with a BCom degree – to the extent that the graduate will be able to pursue postgraduate studies in a BCom associated discipline such as Business Management, Accounting or Economics.

This qualification may be followed by a two-year LLB qualification.
