CPM prepares students for entry into the diverse and exciting world of cultural policy, cultural economy, city making, arts management, cultural leadership and activism, cultural administration and arts marketing. Students learn about and engage with the arts and culture sector in SA, the policy environment in which operates, and the concepts, theories, histories, values and objectives of arts and culture organisations in the cultural economy internationally and in South Africa.
The Department of Cultural Policy and Management (CP&M) within the School of Arts offers Masters and Honours degrees, preparing students for entry into a diverse and exciting world of cultural policy, cultural economy, city making, arts management, cultural leadership and activism, cultural administration and arts marketing. The degrees are also aimed at mid-career professionals aiming to consolidate their grasp and practice of the field.The Honours degree in Arts, Culture and Heritage Management consists of a research report and four courses - two compulsory courses in Arts Management (Arts Marketing and Business Studies - to be replaced with Cultural Entrepreneurship from 2019 - and Arts Organisational Marketing and Sponsorship) and two electives. Directions in Cultural Leadership is available as an elective and students can choose their fourth course from electives in other department within the School of Arts and the Humanities.The Honours full-time requires students to complete all four courses and the research long essay in one year, while part-time commitment requires students to complete two courses in the first year and the remaining two with the research long essay in their second year of study. Each course is a semester in length, and the contact time (attendance) for each course is one afternoon per week during term time.The Cultural Policy and Management teaching team is made up of professionals, researchers, experts and practitioners who are actively involved in the world of policy, management, administration, marketing and leadership in the cultural economy.
