The Bachelor of Arts with Honours in the field of Creative Writing is a 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time degree. The degree attracts students of literature as well as seasoned writers who would like to focus on their creative writing skills.

The degree has five components. Participants are required to do the core course, as well as two writing courses (see list of options below), one literature course from any of the departments in the School of Literature, Language and Media Studies, and a long essay. Attendance at weekly writing seminars is compuslory.With the approval of the Honours coordinator, students may choose to do one of their optional courses in another programme.
Places are limited in each of the optional courses and must be booked in advance with the convenor.Semester 1

• Core Course: Working Concepts in Creative Writing (compulsory)
• Long essay (compuslory, submit at the end of the year)
• Writing for Performance
• The ABC of Travel Writing
• The Story of Money
• Various literature courses (compulsory to do ONE literature course in either semester)

• Creative Writing for Journalists
• Feature Writing
• Writing: Theory and Praxis
• Writing IVB: Writing for Performance
• Writing Immersion: Special Topic in Creative Writing
• Writing Poetry
• Selected Topic in Journalism: Narrative Non-Fiction in South Africa
• Image and Text
• Various literature courses (compulsory to do ONE literature course in either semester)
