Doctor of Philosophy in Art History offered by the University of Johannesburg
A candidate is required to produce a scholarly thesis, normally between 70,000 and 80,000 words, that contributes new knowledge and understanding to an aspect of the visual arts or an aspect of visual culture in a wider sense. The topic of study is identified by the candidate himself or herself, in consultation with an appointed supervisor, and is developed into a proposal that must be approved by the Higher Degrees Committee of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture. Candidates are expected to demonstrate intellectual independence, and to have the background knowledge and understanding of the discipline and its methodologies and approaches to produce a thesis which meets international standards of scholarly writing. Candidates registered for study are expected to contribute towards discourse through the publication of articles and/or by participating in conferences in art history or cognate disciplines.
