Bachelor of Psychology: a Broad Field for a Broad Matter
Wednesday, 18 November 2020
One of the most popular fields of study all around the world is Psychology, and that raises the question... Why is that?
Well, let’s start from the definition of psychology: the British Psychological Society defines psychology as the “scientific study of human mind and behaviour: how we think, feel, act and interact individually and in groups”. That explains a lot. Thinking about the mind’s role in our daily life, in how it shapes the way we see the world, the way we behave and interact with others is quite attractive. Getting to know how and why something works the way it does is something almost everyone pursues, but the thing is that most of the times learning how a machine functions is a short process, once you have figured it out that's it, while looking at the mind everything is not so exact and is always changing.
A bachelor’s degree in psychology is a nice way to dive deep into the functioning of the mind. It’s the chance to understand yourself and others on a more complex level. But it’s also a great opportunity to discover that maybe you are interested in one of the many branches this field has.
From Sports Psychology to Health Psychology and from Clinical Psychology to Industrial-Organisational Psychology, the field is wide and diverse. So not only you have a deep and complex object of study like the mind, but also you have several areas in which you can develop as a professional, each with its own implications and unique characteristics and challenges.
Of course, earning this bachelor’s degree will not only give you the tools you need to understand others, but it will also make you look inside the functioning of your own mind, finding out things about it and yourself that you might haven’t even thought about. Plus, you will understand others and that will probably give you the opportunity to help them understand themselves or the problems that they are facing. So it's a rewarding job in every sense imaginable.
Now, a bachelor’s degree doesn’t have to be your last academic experience related to psychology, you can pursue a master’s degree or a doctorate in the field, but it is definitely your first step.
There are many institutions where you can pursue this bachelor’s degree but there is one that specializes in psychology: The South African College of Applied Psychology. With a total length of four years and the possibility of studying in either Johannesburg or Cape Town, this academic institution is one of your best options.
