Chemical Engineers are of paramount importance, and now the world is able to see it more than ever as humanity faces one of the most threatening pandemics in the history of the contemporary world: Covid-19. As Chemical Engineers play a major role in the discovery and development of new drugs for the healthcare system, among other important duties they have, now the world is able to see how important chemical engineering is. Stellenbosch University has three top programmes to offer you: a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree and a PhD in Chemical Engineering.

Chemical engineers develop and design chemical manufacturing processes. Chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry, biology, physics, and math to solve problems that involve the production or use of chemicals, fuel, drugs, food, and many other products.

Why study Chemical Engineering at Stellenbosch University?

  • Chemical engineering is extremely necessary as it helps lead to advances in health care, including technology and medicine. It also helps develop processing systems that more efficiently manage waste disposal. Chemical engineering plays a vital role in food processing that helps companies make food consumable in a more affordable and healthy way.
  • Chemical Engineers have revolutionized the way in which traditional industries work. They have designed and implemented more efficient and productive ways of dealing with industries like oil refineries, because of their knowledge and skills of data science and statistics. Because of these achievements, and some impressive others, chemical engineers are in high demand.
  • Chemical engineers have a high earning potential. It is one of the highest paying branches of engineering. In South Africa,  chemical engineers earn an average salary of R 9 926 per month.
  • Chemical engineering is a career that equips you with analysis and decision- making skills that are important in both engineering and other professions.
  • These professionals have a wide range of job opportunities. The practice of chemical engineering comprises the development, design, construction and/or operation of processes on an economical basis. Chemical engineers work in a wide range of concerns, from large multinational companies to small consultation partnerships.
  • It is a global growing profession. The chemical engineering profession is globally recognized and you will be able to work anywhere in the world.

These are some of the reasons why you should consider pursuing a career in Chemical Engineering, but there are many more.

Stellenbosch University is one of the best universities in South Africa. It offers three top programmes in Chemical Engineering. Those top programmes include a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree and a PhD in chemical engineering that you should take advantage of. Here is a description of those programmes:

What knowledge and skills does this programme equip one with?
Chemical engineers are equipped with a thorough knowledge of the fundamental sciences of mathematics, physics and chemistry, as well as of thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, mass transfer, reactor design, separation processes, control systems and plant design. The bachelor’s degree programme in chemical engineering also contains elective modules in mineral processing.

The master’s degree is a 100% research-based programme, generally requiring full-time study and research over a period of 18 – 24 months. Part-time candidates of this master’s degree who are working in the industry are considered, and enrolment stretches over approximately three to four years.

The PhD programme is 100% research based, requiring full-time study and enrolment of two to three years. Part-time enrolment is considered in special cases, e.g. if the candidate is employed as an engineer and wants to do research in the industry in collaboration with a supervisor in the Department. A dissertation is produced for evaluation, as well as sufficient academic articles that are submitted and accepted in accredited academic journals as part of fulfilment and attainment of the degree.
